House music had a huge effect on me...

Hi, Please introduce yourself to those unfamiliar with your DJ life.

Hi, I’m Andy Bacon. I’m from Plymouth, Devon. I’ve been dj’ing in and around the SW scene for over 20 years now. I’ve been fortunate to be in some amazing line ups over the years. My passion for Dj’ing has been there since being a teen. I remember my big brother buying Bomb The Bass - Beat Dis on 12” in the late 80’s & I was like what is that… from that moment I was hooked on electronic dance music. There were a number of close friends at Comprehensive School who shared a passion for the early rave scene. We’d collect our vinyl and have little mix sessions. Fast forward to 1995 where I did a season in Ibiza. This shaped my DJ sound for the future. Huge influences such as John Kelly, Oakenfold, Danny Rampling & Andy Carroll. Returning home I definitely knew my sound, House Music had a huge effect on me & when I returned home I started to collect my vinyl and purchased my first set of 1210’s.

Describe your DJ sound.

I’d like to think I’m a learned selector with old school values. I’m passionate about many genres, but it always comes back to House, with catchy piano loops and uplifting vocals.

I’m a lover of multi genres, Progressive, Deep, Electronica, Soulful House...

Tell us how you have kept busy during the last year or so of lockdowns.

I used the time productively by re-renovating our Bed and Breakfast here in Tavistock. Spending good quality time with my wife and daughter Darcey. We’re lucky to be on the outskirts of Dartmoor. So we’d either go for a bike ride or a bike. For downtime I started weekly live Lockdown Sessions. It really helped me get through a difficult period…. Not being able to play anywhere was tough. I worked out how to do a good quality live stream, either through Facebook or Twitch. I even did a live stream in the middle of Dartmoor at sunset for a charity. I borrowed a mini generator, found a spot where I could get a solid signal and it went down great.

Talk us through this podcast episode and why you have chosen to include the tracks that have made the cut.

Initially I found it difficult where to start. I’m a lover of multi genres, Progressive, Deep, Electronica, Soulful House… but it had to be straight up house music. With over 20 years of collecting dance music it was tough compiling an hour mix. However… I decided to pick tracks that have had a big effect on me over the years… I hope everyone enjoys the mix.

We explore the thoughts of artists and music sharing. In today's digital age, discovering new music has become more accessible than ever due to online platforms like Spotify, SoundCloud, and download services such as Beatport. While traditional methods of exploring music, such as visiting record shops, have diminished in popularity, the process of musical exploration remains significant and enriching, especially when one encounters a standout track. For performing artists, the quest for fresh music is a continuous endeavor, often regarded as equally important as the performance itself. This raises an interesting question: is it appropriate for artists to keep the details of their music sources confidential? This topic invites further discussion from some of the South West DJs and producers on the nature of music discovery in the modern landscape.
