We explore the thoughts of artists and music sharing. In today's digital age, discovering new music has become more accessible than ever due to online platforms like Spotify, SoundCloud, and download services such as Beatport. While traditional methods of exploring music, such as visiting record shops, have diminished in popularity, the process of musical exploration remains significant and enriching, especially when one encounters a standout track. For performing artists, the quest for fresh music is a continuous endeavor, often regarded as equally important as the performance itself. This raises an interesting question: is it appropriate for artists to keep the details of their music sources confidential? This topic invites further discussion from some of the South West DJs and producers on the nature of music discovery in the modern landscape.

Artist Interview

...I love a groovey bassline, catchy vocals and hypnotic rhythms...

Please introduce yourself to those unfamiliar with your DJ sound.

My name is Ben Lawrence and I have been a DJ for only a few years now, starting as a bedroom DJ during lockdown. I would class myself as a multi genre DJ for those that are unfamiliar with my name and DJ sound. As you'll find when listening to a lot of my mixes I love a groovey bassline, catchy vocals and hypnotic rhythms to try and keep the energy high and take everybody on a journey with me by dipping into various genres.

What are your highlights of the past year and what is planned for the future?

I have completed a few goals of mine this year and had a few highlights, but for me personally I haven't felt like I did when on warm up duties for the euros final. Spinning feel good house tunes in a hot and sunny beer garden, in the middle of summer, in front of 840 people was an amazing feeling. Bittersweet moment about the game itself but that feeling of playing in front of my biggest crowd yet is a feeling that will stay with me for sure.

I have had many club/bar managers turn me away or not getting back to me when asking for gigs.

Tell us something positive to inspire future artists.

A positive message to those that have just started will be to keep practicing, keep working, be patient and most importantly always be humble. I have had many club/bar managers turn me away or not getting back to me when asking for gigs. I still get no's now but the main thing is to stay positive and stay patient as something will always come up.

What artists have inspired your DJ style?

A few of my favourite DJ's are all based in the north east/scotland so I guess that's where I take a lot of my inspiration from. However one artist in particular who has a huge amount of influence on me and that's Patrick Topping. He's introduced me to a lot of my favourite songs and always come away from his sets highly inspired.

Talk us through your podcast mix track selection.

I hope you enjoyed listening to my podcast mix as much as I did curating and recording it. The track selection process I found quite difficult because there is so many good tunes I wanted to play, but in the end I just went with 20 of my favourite songs to help portray my personality through the power of dance music.
