We explore the thoughts of artists and music sharing. In today's digital age, discovering new music has become more accessible than ever due to online platforms like Spotify, SoundCloud, and download services such as Beatport. While traditional methods of exploring music, such as visiting record shops, have diminished in popularity, the process of musical exploration remains significant and enriching, especially when one encounters a standout track. For performing artists, the quest for fresh music is a continuous endeavor, often regarded as equally important as the performance itself. This raises an interesting question: is it appropriate for artists to keep the details of their music sources confidential? This topic invites further discussion from some of the South West DJs and producers on the nature of music discovery in the modern landscape.

Artist Interview

...2022 is shaping up nicely with several orginals and remixes signed...

Hi, please introduce yourself to those unfamiliar with your work.

Hi! Many of your older listeners may remember me from my residencies at the Dance Academy and Candy along with playing nights at Scream, United, The Monastery, Sound Factory and many other venues across the South West throughout the 90’s.

Currently I’m known for my residencies on the global podcast platform Melodic Beats along with my monthly radio show “Connected” on Quantum Radio FM, which is heading to Beach Radio in the New Year, as well as my productions on Limbo Records, Melodic Beats Recordings, Pangea Records and Resonate Together.

How have you utilised the 2020/21 lockdowns?

I count myself lucky to work for a good company that supported its staff and ensured we didn’t struggle financially - I know lots of people were not so lucky and has truly been a tough time for all.

With this extra time and revaluation of priorities that the pandemic brought, it gave me the chance to really re-discover my love of dance music and all things electronic after a time away concentrating on my family and career.

At the beginning of 2020 I met up with a very old friend Paul Honey who I used to play with back in the 90’s - we were residents at Dance Academy when it first re-opened in 1997. He started the Melodic Beats platform in late 2019 and had seen that I was also rediscovering my love of dance music and asked me if I’d like to come on board as a resident, also joining us was another old friend Sam Woods (Apostille).

The podcast really started to build momentum during lockdown and following a suggestion from another old friend, Lukas Pour-Hashemi, a record label seemed the logical progression, so we took that next step. Our first release was a track I had written with Lukas called “Roodles” I Know, which received great support on promo with lots of radio, podcast streams and radio plays globally, this really helped launch the label.

We are now up to our 19th label release and have some amazing producers and remixers on board: Audio Glider, Kiz Pattinson, Richie Blacker, Nigel Dawson, Nila, Around U, Alex Efe, Last Two Standing, Sounom & Sagou, Ranj Kaler, Glen Molloy, Jaap Ligthart and many more – too many to list here, so check out the label for more info.

The rest of 2020 saw me follow up my debut on the label with a remix of Renaissance legend Nigel Dawson’s track “Walk With Me”. Another original release “Short Stuff”, which was signed by legendary Progressive house label Limbo, featuring remixes by Pablo Gargano and Nila. “Short Stuff” peaked at No.8 in the UK Upfront Dance chart!  Next up, alongside Richie Blacker and Choopie, a remix of Progressive House classic Gypsy “I Trance You” that reached No 1 in the UK Upfront Dance chart.

2021 has seen me continue this trend with further releases on Limbo, Pangea Records, Melodic Beats Recordings, Limbo Black and Resonate together all being received with critical acclaim and hitting the Beatport charts.

Remixes for these releases came courtesy of Nick Muir, Phraktel and Damien spencer. I also delivered several remixes as well for the above labels.

So all in all a very creative time and 2022 is shaping up nicely with several orginals and remixes signed and planned for release in the New Year. I feel I’m making up for lost time - a bit of a mid-life crisis I suppose, some people buy a sports car, I make music!

With my mixes I always like to take the listener on journey...

Talk us through your podcast mix track selection.

My mix is very much the sound I’ve been playing throughout the summer at various gig and festivals. It’s a fusion of Breaks, Soundscapes, Electronica and of course Progressive House which is what I known for playing. With my mixes I always like to take the listener on journey and have gone for a mix that you could happily sit and listen to as well as get up on the floor and get your groove on.

Track selection features some of my favourite artists and Labels at the moment, Framewerk and their Capital Heaven Label have been releases some amazing stuff over the last year or so. Rob Sordano “Audio Glider” has been absolute machine with his output and quality of releases, I feature two new ones of his forth coming on our label Melodic Beats recordings in December.  Gai Barone whose music is so full of emotion, his latest EP release with Micah is just heavenly and of course Richie Blacker whose star is ascending ever higher delivers an amazing re-work of FSOL Classic Papa New Guinea.

I hope you enjoy it and thank you for having me on the platform. If you like what you hear then head over to www.melodicbeatspodcast.com for more of the same.
