Artist Interview

"My Dad was the lead singer in a rock band and I spent my childhood listening to the likes of Hendrix, Deep Purple and The Beetles..."

Hi Danae, it’s your first time being featured on Little South! Please introduce yourself.

 ï»¿

Hey, thank you so much for having me, it's great to be featured on Little South! Where do I start? I grew up surrounded by musical influences. My Dad was the lead singer in a rock band and I spent my childhood listening to the likes of Hendrix, Deep Purple and The Beetles amongst other phenomenal artists. We'd sit and jam together, both singing whilst my Dad played the guitar and I played the keyboard. As I reached my teen years I discovered the art of DJing. My DJing journey began with jungle... my first mix being Long Dark Tunnel and The Helicopter. From there on in I progressed through all of the genres of EDM until I found House Music.

How have you been filling your time during the UK lockdown?

Lockdown has been an interesting and challenging time for all of us!  Like the rest of the population I have probably consumed too much food and alcohol. As well as attempting to homeschool my gorgeous girls, which has mainly involved surfing and bike riding,  I have spent a lot of time reflecting about where I see my DJ career going. Even though I mainly play house now I have always been a versatile DJ playing across all genres and have been considering moving across to other genres.

"I pride myself on playing "All Things House" and I hope this reflects in my mix."

Where should you be playing this summer?

Ah this summer was jam packed full of amazing gigs!! I am missing gigs at The Great Estate,  Casa Weekender, Wish Fest as well as the Dead Disco which is a night Natz and I have launched. I've continued to play online supporting amazing groups such as Cornwall Pride, The Works on line Festival and the most exciting of all playing for the Celtic Chaos Crew who represent this part of the world at the incredible Burning Man Festival which Natz and I will be playing at once this is over.

What’s planned for the next 12 months?

What's planned for the next 12 months. Well that's a tricky one with all of the covid drama going on! I've had a lot of bookings for this year with my DJ partner in crime Natz. I guess we have to wait and see wait BoJo announces... what is and what isn't acceptable before I can really answer this question. However this being said I'll continue to stream live online doing my thing.

Talk us us through your podcast tune selection.

My mix hopefully brings you a range of house music featuring some of my favourite artists such as Peggy Gou, an absolute legend bringing female artists to the forefront, as well as David Penn, Purple Disco Machine and Claptone to name a few. I pride myself on playing "All Things House" and I hope this reflects in my mix. Enjoy and once again thanks for having me.

We explore the thoughts of artists and music sharing. In today's digital age, discovering new music has become more accessible than ever due to online platforms like Spotify, SoundCloud, and download services such as Beatport. While traditional methods of exploring music, such as visiting record shops, have diminished in popularity, the process of musical exploration remains significant and enriching, especially when one encounters a standout track. For performing artists, the quest for fresh music is a continuous endeavor, often regarded as equally important as the performance itself. This raises an interesting question: is it appropriate for artists to keep the details of their music sources confidential? This topic invites further discussion from some of the South West DJs and producers on the nature of music discovery in the modern landscape.
