We are pleased to feature Drofler for a Q&A and something a bit special for his DJ mix that we are loving! Drofler talks about his time during lockdown and talks about his love for electro.
Hi, please introduce yourself to those unfamiliar with your work.
Hiya and thanks for having me. I’m Drofler (Steve) and I’ve been DJing and producing since around '94. I started off when Techno was Trance, Dubstep wasn’t thing, a night out cost £20. Djing was 2 turntables and a mixer and I’ve never really progressed from that and would prefer plastic over digital any day (given the chance).
I don’t really have a preference of genre but I always steer towards darker music. I think that cheese belongs on a plate and not in the speakers.
You have may have seen me on at Algorithim, The Masked Ball or Frendzy amongst other events and I've got a few tunes on a popular fruit based download site.
How have you utilised the 2020/21 lockdowns?
Errrrr. I built a new bedroom studio at my place and then wasted months making insane noises on new synths but no real music. It takes me ages to actually finish a track and even then I usually just sit on it.
Event wise, there’s been nothing to play and it’s been really slow to restart for obvious reasons. I’m hoping to be part of an up and coming pre-christmas session in Penzance but that's still in the making.
Here’s for a fun filled 2022.
Describe your DJ style.
Its hard to make a journey to fit into 60 minutes and I usually play a mix of Melodic / progressive tech-ish stuff but on this mix, I’ve gone back to my love of Electro. This is what I am into right now. I guess with the onset of winter I feel like I wanted to produce a darker, more sinister ride. A Dystopian view of our economic climate, turkeys for Christmas and all that tyrannical nonsense. Cynical music for a skeptical mind.
Talk us through your podcast mix track selection.
You’ve got tracks released last week and tracks that came out in 95. I guess it's mostly Electro but some of the new school might call some of the songs, Bass or Techno. 2 decks, no FX. Ok, that’s a lie, there one loop hidden away in there. I think labelling music is only good for finding it. After that, call it what you want.
