Artist Interview

A white background with a few lines on it

The next 12 months I’m looking to take my music production further & build Alkie as an artist.

Please introduce yourself to those unfamiliar with your DJ sound.

Hi my name is Alkie, I’m a DJ/Producer from the South West. I am also one half of the DJ duo symbiosis.

I have been mixing for a number of years however started playing ‘out’ in 2019 & since then have featured regularly DJing at club events & festivals.

Over this time I’ve really developed my sound and mixing style. My DJ sound is normally low end groovers with a percussive edge. I’m a huge fan of a big vocal and a sucker for a well made edit.

What are your highlights of the past year and what is planned for the future?

I have been lucky to have another successful 12 months in music with 2 of the main highlight coming in May & August last year where as symbiosis I got to perform & open the event - ALIVE @ Argyle which meant playing on that massive stage in a Stadium along with supporting some of the industries heavy weights. Then in August I got to perform on the UNLEASHED stage at Boardmasters. Those are the moments that show hard work does pay off. Also I would like to say a huge thank you to all promoters and venues that invited me to play last year.

The next 12 months I’m looking to take my music production further & build Alkie as an artist. I have started off the year well with artist & label support on my music production & I really cannot wait to see what the future holds. Watch this space :)

I also take a lot of inspiration from Jamie Jones, Peggy Gou & also my symbiosis partner Jim.

Tell us something positive to inspire future artists.

Age is just a number! We are under this misconception that there Is an age limit when it comes to success in music. However the truth is so far away from this is unbelievable. I have had more musical success in my 30s than I’ve ever had before. It just shows that if you keep pushing, work hard and stay authentically you. The right opportunities will arise & then it's down to you to grab that opportunity with both hands.

What artists have inspired your DJ style?

One of my biggest inspirations and still is to this day is Dennis Cruz. I love the way he builds a set and the track selection is always amazing. I also take a lot of inspiration from Jamie Jones, Peggy Gou & also my symbiosis partner Jim. The have really shaped the way I mix and the way I look at a set.

Talk us through your podcast mix track selection.

In my podcast mix I wanted to show some of my favourite styles of house I really enjoy playing. From classic house to Tech House, Latin Tech & even a spot of Minimal Deep Tech for good measure. This shows the main styles I like to incorporate in my sets and I’ve even chucked in one of my unreleased track PARADO into this mix. Im a big fan of expression on the dance floor and I hope this mix allows you to make a dance floor wherever you are when you listen to it.

Thank you for inviting me to record this mix and to do this interview with you.

Keep an eye on my social medias for track releases & event updates.

We explore the thoughts of artists and music sharing. In today's digital age, discovering new music has become more accessible than ever due to online platforms like Spotify, SoundCloud, and download services such as Beatport. While traditional methods of exploring music, such as visiting record shops, have diminished in popularity, the process of musical exploration remains significant and enriching, especially when one encounters a standout track. For performing artists, the quest for fresh music is a continuous endeavor, often regarded as equally important as the performance itself. This raises an interesting question: is it appropriate for artists to keep the details of their music sources confidential? This topic invites further discussion from some of the South West DJs and producers on the nature of music discovery in the modern landscape.
