We explore the thoughts of artists and music sharing. In today's digital age, discovering new music has become more accessible than ever due to online platforms like Spotify, SoundCloud, and download services such as Beatport. While traditional methods of exploring music, such as visiting record shops, have diminished in popularity, the process of musical exploration remains significant and enriching, especially when one encounters a standout track. For performing artists, the quest for fresh music is a continuous endeavor, often regarded as equally important as the performance itself. This raises an interesting question: is it appropriate for artists to keep the details of their music sources confidential? This topic invites further discussion from some of the South West DJs and producers on the nature of music discovery in the modern landscape.

Artist Interview

Not only am I a DJ but I'm a Hair & Makeup Artist...

Please introduce yourself to those unfamiliar with your DJ life.

Hello Little South, my name is Dollface. I have just finished my second year as a DJ and specialise in Jump Up D&B and Dark techno. I work for Sick & Naughty Records, Indulgence With A Twist and I am a Raw Rotation resident. On top of my specialist genres, I have played multi-genre gigs and I appreciate all music. Not only am I a DJ but I'm a Hair & Makeup Artist and I turn into painted creations of mine before I play for them.

I have a number of mixing styles, as you'll hear during this podcast but I can adapt my style for any crowd.

Describe your DJ sound.

The best way to describe my sound is "a cute kitten that then scratches you and you think about it for a while after". I have a number of mixing styles, as you'll hear during this podcast but I can adapt my style for any crowd.

What is your view on how the live music and nightlife scene has been shaped since the Covid lockdowns?

You must remember that it was illegal to sing and dance for 18 months. People formed social bubbles and learned to entertain themselves at home. They also learned patience. I spent a whole year going to events in 2022, sometimes 3 events a night to learn about promoting. I noticed that family-orientated festivals were the most popular. As people saved to pay to attend larger events, they sacrificed their weekly club night outings. They are also still socialising in their bubbles, quality over quantity seems to be the trend and I myself as a DJ have also taken this onboard and have started doing the same. Opting to play for larger events.

I know of 3 female DJs, that I want to give shouts to, as they worked tirelessly throughout 2022 to keep their weekly club nights going. Dannae B at Dead Famous, Phoenix Fox with her Namaste Nights, and Trix Soanes with her Raw Rotation events.

Talk us through your podcast mix track selection.

A mix of memories exclusively for you. I begin with the track that I played out the most since starting my Drum & Bass journey in August 2022. The second track is actually a remix of a Tech House tune I played a lot in my sets previously which has become somewhat iconic across the dance music scene - Sub Focus's remix of 'Do It To It' by Acraze. I must have heard these lyrics a hundred times, especially when working with The KBSK Dancers who have danced for some of my sets at the larger gigs I have performed at.

I have also included some tracks that were requested by some of the crew members I work alongside at Sick & Naughty Records (big shout out to Kev from the stage production crew). Towards the end, I have a few tracks I have played in homage to my Techno style, especially my last tune! And of course, a shout-out to Devinyl, here's hoping my next mix is riddled with your upcoming releases this year!

I hope you enjoy this podcast and I'll see you all in a field soon! Dollface x
