Cornwall house DJ and producer, Drift is back with what he describes as a podcast mix with peak time flavours that you can expect to hear from his Friday night residency at Mangos, Falmouth.
Hi Drift, tell us about your year as a DJ to date.
Hi, yeah it’s been a really good year for me musically. I’ve been fortunate enough to have had some awesome gigs and released some music on some of my favourite record labels.
What’s been your stand out gig or experience?
To be honest that really is a tough one as there have been quite a few stand out gigs this year and I’ve really enjoyed them all. The Masked Ball in May for the Durty Disco crew which was really cool, as was Boardmasters festival once again. I think it must be the 7th year I’ve played BM now and it’s just so much fun. Frendzy at the end of summer is always great to catch up with many of the local DJs as it’s the only time that we’re all on the same billing which is just really cool.
My weekly residency at Mangos in Falmouth has really delivered the goods with some incredible nights since opening earlier in the year. But I think the absolute stand out has to be playing the Treeline stage at Leopalooza Festival when my 3 year boy old broke free from my wife, ran through the crowd, got past security and some how managed to get up on stage where he appeared next to me mid set while I was playing. I couldn’t quite believe what I was seeing so I just picked him up so that he could see the crowd and we had a little dance together before handing him back to my slightly flustered wife. Leopalooza is always such a vibe and I’ve been lucky enough to have been asked back 4 times now which is really nice of them.
Tell about the tunes you’ve been releasing this year.
I don’t really put out a lot of music as I simply do not have the time to get into the studio now with work and family commitments. I’m probably only averaging 5 or 6 releases a year. That said the year started off well with a series of tracks on My Digital Enemy’s Zulu Records which has been one of my favourite labels over the last few years. Then I signed a couple of tracks to UK house music legends the Hoxton Whores label, Whore House. One that came out in the summer and another that’s due out any day now. I’ve also got a couple of other tracks that are with another fantastic label but I’m afraid I can’t really give any more details about that just yet.
Talk us through your house music residency in Falmouth.
Ahh Mangos is the best, I absolutely love it there! The owner who I have actually known for many years offered me the weekly Friday night residency way back at the beginning of the year months before it was even due to open and my initial thought was although it was a fantastic opportunity, committing to a weekly residency when I have two young children which of course I like to do stuff with at the weekends, might just be stretching myself a little too far. So I asked my good friend Myles Diverse (who is also one of Littlesouth’s featured DJ’s and certainly one of the very best in the south west ) if he would like to join me as co-resident and we would alternate week on/week off basis. Well, that was the idea anyway..
We now both play each week going back to back for the entire night which works a treat! Yes I’m tired after getting in at gone 4am every Saturday morning but it is so worth it. The crowd at Mangos are just awesome! They’re incredibly knowledgable and receptive to the more underground House and Tech flavours that we play and we both feel very lucky to have the opportunity to play there week in week out.
What’s next for you?
This coming year I’ll be getting my head down in the studio with some possible collaborations are on the cards which is quite exciting. I’ve also been asked to get involved in a new large event promotion which is going to be great but I’ve got to keep that a little quite just for now though but all will be revealed in good time..
I’m hoping to build on my residency at Mangos where I also promote my bi-monthly Drop events which play host to some of the finest DJ’s from the South West and beyond. I’ve always liked to help young up-and-coming DJs wherever I can and I now have the opportunity to give them a platform on which to shine, so we will be offering bedroom and relatively unknown DJ’s the chance to play at Mangos, not just an early slot to an empty club but a peak time slot when the club is in full swing. These guys are the next generation of DJs and I want to help them on their way to achieve their dreams if I possibly can.
Tell us about your tune selection for this podcast mix.
The tracks in the this podcast reflect the more Tech House and peak time flavours that you can hear me playing at Mangos and any other events. It’s just pure dance floor Tech with a few Melodic Tech heaters for good measure.
I hope you all like it x
